How much play is in transfer case ?? I get a thud so jacked truck up rear end is OK . The play is from transfer case .the ujoints look good
How do I open and look at chain and if floppy what's needed

grammar and detail would be helpful but there shouldnt be much play in the tcase itself, pull the plugs check the fluid and if you can see inside rock the driveshaft back and forth see if you have a floppy chain

also when is it clunking? I'm assuming when you're going into 4wd?

No clanking in 2w at a start like ujoints are bad but its in case I think its chain like u said
