Default charging

Hello all,
I have a 86 C30 and I'm having trouble with the alternator. It wasn't charging so I bought one a autozone. I when I check that battery voltage (fluke meter) it shows (not running). When I start the truck the voltage reads less 12.32. When I pull the hot cable off the truck dies. Now in the past that would mean that the alternator was not charging. So I either I just bought a bad alternator or it is grounded. What are your thoughts?
Thanks
jim

You have everything plugged in? If so, I'd say take it back to Autozone.

I took the alternator to the zone and they tested it. It was good. So I must have a bad connection somewhere. I know the battery connection and the one side of the clipped wires are good. Does any one know where the field wire goes to? I know it is a switched wire but I don't know where they would have tied it into. I guess I need to get a wire drawing.

Thanks
jim
