Sooo.. i have a work truck, and today noticed a very fast ticking coming from the drivers side of the engine. After idling for a while, it got barely noticable, and after shutting the truck down for 5 to 10 minutes, it wouldnt be there ne more, but once i started driving the truck for say 20 miles, and the motor heated up, it started again. Any suggestions? This truck is a crew truck for a business we JUST started, so its imparitive that i save it. lol

Its a 94 3500 dually.

Gas or diesel? What size engine?

My first inclination would be to say that you have a bent lifter......but I am nowhere close to a mechanic. Perhaps you might have a case of "oil starvation" or something like that.

jk23112 is close. not a bent lifter but one that is collapsing or has collapsed. that would be first thought. may also be a slight exhaust leak. you may have to try to pin point it closer. but if the ticking goes up and down with rpm, i would say lifter issue. it's pretty simple to change them out, typically 3 hours or if you know what you're doing.

 

I second the lifter or exhaust leak. Usually a exhaust leak at the manifold gets quieter as the engine gets hotter. Your description sounds more like a lifter. I have seen the new BG engine flush machine cure more than 75% of lifter taps.

 

hey guys.. sorry its a 350 gas job. i have been reading online that it could be the lifters too. curious as to know how much its gonna cost me if a mechanic does it, or if i could find a walk through online even.
