Default Chevy Transmission?

I have a 1995 chevy K1500 four wheel drive, automatic, that when I shift it from park to Reverse or drive it doesnt engage, unless I shut it offlet it set for a minute then it will engauge and go only a few hundred yards. There is some chattering noise underneath where the linkage goes into the transmission. What should I do and how can fix it myself?

First of all, hows the fluid look and how much is in the tranny? Gotta ask the obvious first.

Sounds like it could maybe.. sorta... ( this is a long shot) be the pump in the tranny going bad. That can cause a huge delay in shifting into drive, if-not, a complete failure to **** into drive. Pretty sure..

Does it only do it when the motor is cold? Or does it do that regardless of temp.?

I'm wondering what the rattling is. Maybe the 2-4 band not engaging the drum because of not enough pressure? That would sure be in line with the low fluid or bad pump theory.
