2004 with auto dimming mirrors
left side and rear view mirrors are dark and wont return to normal.
Is there a way to turn auto dim off?
Is there a fuse gone bad?
Truck almost unsafe to drive.

 

In the daylight, is there discoloration of the glass? Almost like a rainbow? If so the glass needs to be replaced.

 

it does not. Looks like a pair of sun glasses dark.

 

Thanks Gumby! Got truck out today while sun was out. When sun hit directly on mirror, it had the blue haze.

The discoloration I’m talking about is typically rainbow-esque in appearance (mixes of colors rather than defined rows) and doesn’t require direct sunlight to be seen. That doesn’t mean yours aren’t needing replacement, but we better determine other possible causes first.

The auto dim feature can be turned off using the power button on the rear view mirror. Ignition must be on to toggle it on/off. The sensors that affect the feature are the sun load sensor (on back of mirror or center of dash) and a photocell sensor on the glass side of the inside rear view mirror. The outside mirror is controlled by the same circuits that control the inside mirror. If it’s been a while since you’ve dusted/wiped down the dash and inside mirror, a good cleaning of the sensor lenses will only help their operation.

I found conflicting information about which fuse powers the system, but it’s either the IGN E or SIR fuse in the underhood fuse block (if the air bag light isn’t on, it’s probably not the SIR fuse). Either way, you can confirm power to the inside mirror on the solid yellow wire with the key on. Check for power with a test light after pulling one of the fuses to verify the correct one. The ground for the mirror is the solid black wire.

Thanks Gumby22, I tossed face cover over rear view mirror (Knckle-head move) blocking sensor. All is good now.
