Default Engine Tapping

Hiya,

I have a 2004 Silverado with the 4.3 V6 engine.

I was driving, and the oil pressure warning light came on, and the gauge dropped to zero. I babied it the last few miles to my work's shop, but it had developed a tapping by the time I got there.

I tore the engine apart, and replaced the cam, lifters, and oil pump. Checked all the rods for bend, but there was none, so didn't replace them.

I just got it all back together yesterday, and the noise came back after idling for just about 5 min.

I am a carpenter by trade, and not a mechanic, but to my ears, it is for sure a top end noise, and mechanical sounding in nature.

I am out of ideas, so i though you good folk might have some thoughts.

Thanks in advance,
Fred

Does it make the tapping sound all the time or just at start up?

You need an engine; simple as that. They cannot be run without oil.

So, there is nothing I can replace aside from the entire engine?

I'd sure be looking at that crankshaft as that is where the starvation starts.

When a oil light comes on, the VERY FIRST thing you do is shut the engine down.
