Engine Timing

i have a 1993 chevy k1500 with a v6 enginei installed new distributor cause whn i got it they had it pulled out. Now when i crank it i have to stay on the gas for it to stay running but when i put it in gear it starts pinging and has no power. But when in nuetral and park it doesnt ping
