Default Exhaust Filter

I just had my fuel filter changed for the first time and now every time I start my truck, it displays "cleaning exhaust filter. Keep driving until message is cleared." This has been display 5 times now. Also, my check engine light came on right before my fuel filter got changed and the code it shows is for about 5 different problems it could be. Any suggestions on the exhaust filter thing? My mechanic dad said that's a new one for him.

That sounds like a diesel-related problem. Your DPF (diesel particulate filter) in the Duramax 6.6L engine might be clogged. We have heavy trucks at work (Sterlings, Freightliners and Hinos) equipped with a DPF, and they can get to be a big pain in the neck.

It is possible - if GM has the same type of electronic sensors as the larger trucks - that you need to have the computer reset. This usually has to be done by a dealership or someone else with the diagnostic equipment to clear the code(s) that may cause the "check engine" light to be activated.

Good luck!!
