Default Exhaust Question on 1996 Z71

I beginning to think my catalytic converter is stopped up on my 1996 Z. I was thinking about taking it off and punching a hole through the center of it instead of going and buying a new one, but im worried about the check engine light coming on or the O2 sensors acting up. Has any tried this with any luck??

If you do that, your gas mileage will drop like a rock and it won't run like it should. You are better off to replace the cat and o2 sensors.
