Default four wheel drive problem

Hey everyone.I got a little...somewhat big of a problem.I have a 1992 chevy silverado regular cab.It has a 305(5.0) with 185k on it with four wheel drive.About a month ago I went to pull out of our drive way.(which is a pretty good hill when leaving the house)And when I pull the four wheel drive shifter back to go in 4 high it wouldn't go into 4 low or 4 high(I checked the light bulbs already).I'm thinking it is the actuator but I'm not quite sure of the location of how hard it is to change out.I've heard it's not hard to change out at all and it is about 90 to 100 dollars.I'm positive the problem is eletrical and not mechanical.I've already looked and tested and cleaned all the connectors too.Anyone got any other ideas or good instructions on the actuator story for me?Thanks a lot in advance.

The original gas actuators were a problem. GM sold an all electric actuator to replace it. I'm not sure if this is still available. I put one in about 7 years ago and haven't had any problem with it since.

I also saw a kit one time that was purely mechanical. The mechanical kit required running a control cable into the cab. The advantage would be that you could operate in 2WD LO if you had a need to.

The actuator is easy to replace. It is about the only thing on the front axle that has wires running to it. Once you see the new parts, you'll see.

I just had the original actuator replaced in my 1994 K1500. The new unit was available from my Chevy dealer. Along with the new unit it also required a new wiring harness. Now that the work was done by the dealer I crawled under and could see the new unit and the wiring harness. It gets tight with the harness up around the tranny but the rest looked pretty simple and straight forward after the fact.

Had it not been -10 degrees when mine went out I would have replaced it myself.
