Default fuel gauge/fuel sending unit

I just recently bought a used 2000 Silverado LS and fuel gauge either reads or it doesn't. I'm pretty sure its the fuel sending unit. My question is can you just replace the fuel sending unit without replacing the whole fuel pump. Would hate to spend 200 bucks for the whole unit if you just can replace or repair the fuel sending unit. Thx for the replies.

these year model trucks for chevy are bad with fuel pumps, i've seen 5 go out between me and my friends and there's no way round it. Gotta drop the tank and replace the whole thing

I saw on some websites that it seems that you can just buy the sending unit. I'll probably just replace the whole thing since its hasn't been replaced yet. thx for the replies

by the time you pay for just the sending unit, and manage to get the old pump in there, and all back together, Murphy's Law states that the pump itself will fail within minutes of truck running again, leaving you stranded and broke down in a bad or inconvenient place, now having to drop the tank and replace pump without having all your tools handy as you are on the shoulder of a busy road or highway. we've been there. save yourself a huge mess, replace the whole thing.
