Pretty excited just got Gibson headers for my 2001 1500 with the vortec 5.3L (looks almost identical to the truck of the month as well) Looking to install with the help of my father within the next few days. Anyone do header installation before? We were wondering about different types of head gaskets but will probably stick with what was sent with the headers, however my friend mentioned brass gaskets, any thoughts? Also the instructions recommended copper sealant, anyone recommend anything else?

Did you get the shorties that are a direct replacement for the stock manifolds? If so you just wasted your money. I have them and they give no gain in power or MPG. Use the gaskets that were on the truck or what came with the headers. The factory ones work fine.

I have found that the metal backed manifold gaskets work best with headers. IMO

 

Got the headers on successfully today took about a day and a half with two guys working. I can notice a difference in horses on the lower end, I get better "pull" until I hit that power ban about about 40 mph's or so. The best advise I can give for an easy install is take your rig and headers down to the damned mechanic
