Help!! Fan Shroud Needed?

Help!! Fan Shroud Needed?
My fan shroud broke and I was wondering if I really needed it. I will attach the radiator with brackets. I still have the original fan with the clutch. Will I need to worry about overheating??
The mechanic at the nearest shop said it is just for looks and safety. I see that hot rods and tuners don't have them.
Is anyone running without a fan shroud and a stock fan and clutch?
