how to check starter?

how does one hardstart a starter motor out of an '81 350 to test the solenoid and/or starter motor? it's a brand new rebuilt, so i never guessed it had problems but i decided to test it anyways just to rule it out of an ongoing troubleshooting frenzee. thought i did it correctly cuz it seems pretty straight forward to me but got not even a sound out of the solenoid. battery is hot but just not sure if perhaps i was touching the wrong leads? had the pos wire touching the big post and the neg lead touching the little post marked "s." but i even started touching all the other posts with the neg lead and still got nothing, any suggestions i'd much appreciate. thank you!

First mount starter in bench vice
use jumper cables to connect battery to starter
The ground(neg lead) connects to the starter chassis or just to the bench vice will work too
The positive to the big post, then a jumper wire form the + to the solenoid. Only touch the jumper for a second
