Ignition Lock Cylinder

The ignition switch in my Chevy Silverado 1500 LT recently started acting up. I purchased a new one after watching countless videos on how "easy" it is to replace. I followed the directions step by step and now I am stuck! The lock cylinder slot is sitting horizontally while the lock cylinder itself goes in vertically (with a slight. angle). When trying to reinsert the cylinder it essentially makes a tee with the slot and I'm not sure what to do next?

Pictures would be helpful, but it sounds like the new cylinder isn’t correctly indexed to the housing.
It’s been a while since I’ve replaced one but if I’m not mistaken the ignition switch (the part that the lock cylinder turns) has to be in the ON/RUN position and the key has to be inserted into the new lock cylinder to be able to line it up correctly.
