Default K&N Cold Air Intake vs. K&N Filter

Hey Everyone, I am new here. And I just purchased my FIRST Chevy today!!! 2008 Chevy Silverado Crew cab 2wd w/ 4.8L (3.73 rear end). Anyway, I have read numerous of the posts in this forum and I am really impressed by the honest input the members here have given. I hope I can be a useful member.

My question is this, I am interested in putting a K&N CAI on my truck. I have a warranty and I will probably remove the kit when I service the truck.

- Has anyone with my truck actually put on JUST a CAI and what were the results regarding fuel economy? I know the motto of more air in and the computer will automatically add more fuel. But I am getting mixed signals from other posts.

- Other than sound, what benefit would I receive to add a CAI vs. just a K&N filter in the stock box.

I don't plan on making any other mods to the engine. I am going to add a tonneau cover regardless. So I am manly concerned with the benefits of the above mentioned air intake items.

Thanks Guys

New Chevy Owner (YEAH!!!)

you will get more power out of the cai but alot of that power is made at a higher rpm. sounds like what you are doing for the money I would go with just the filter, less money and less work. not sure what you will see for MPG, should help some but I am sure it won't make a big change. I am sure you would get more bang for your buck to get a custom pcm. that would help with mpg. you could do the pcm plus filter for close to the price of the cai.

I have a '95 Silverado with an Airaid Cold Air Intake and i also have a quickshift kit.
I do notice more power when gunning it yes.
However, I only get about 275 - 300 miles a tank of gas.
and only that much If I am doing alot of highway cruising.
If most of my tank is used for putting around town, I get 250 - 275 miles per tank.

saving mpg also is based on your driving habit, if you have a heavy foot dont get a cai, your mpg will decrease significantly, a filter is the cheapest solution for a small increase in hp and mpg, other than that its all up to how much you want to $$$blow

Thanks Guys, I usually have a light foot. I am probably going to go with the kit as I can get a good deal on it.

Of those of you that provided fuel mileage info, did that mileage change after your modifications?

Thanks

Eric

I don't really have a good base example to compare to.
Also I take off from stops a little fast
and I also give quite a bit of throttle when getting onto the freeway.
So I do have a bit of a heavy foot.
It's a 26 gallon tank (I think)
Lets say my average mileage where I would start stalling
would be 300 miles to a tank.
286 divided by 26 = 11.53
So on average I get about 11.5 miles per gallon of gas.
