Default keyless programming

I bought a second keyless entry fob for my 1998 Silverado. The manual says to see the dealer.

Can anyone provide programming instructions?

On the ODBII data port connector, just under or to the left of the steering wheel at the bottom of the dash, the top row of contacts are, from left to right as you look at it, number 1through 8. Bend a small paperclip or something similar to make a jumper and short across terminals 4 & 8. Be sure you get the right ones. The doors will cycle (lock and then unlock) as the receiver enters programming mode.

To program the remote key fobs, with the jumper in place, hold down on the lock and the unlock buttons of the first remoteat the same time until the door locks cycle again. When it cycles, the firstremote is programmed. Program additional remotes in the same way without removing the jumper. You can do this with up to 4 remotes. Then remove the jumper and you are done. All the remotes should work.

Totally different for the 2006. I happened to have done a 1998 and a 1999 recently so knew those. You can find free instructions for about any model here:

I went out yesterday and followed RonH's directions, and it worked great. The jumper wire wouldn't work, the clips were too large, so I used an unfolded paperclip and just held it in place by hand.

Sure beats paying the dealer for 90 seconds work.
