Default Locked up 4.8

I have recently purchased a 1999 chevy with the 4.8 motor and a five speed transmission a mechanic I know told me when a ls motor locks up they are junk and not worth rebuilding he also said I had to buy a motor that was married to a manual transmission because one with an automatic would not work is either of these true

to my knowledge no.

a long time ago manual vs auto engines were balanced differently...internally vs externally. pretty sure they are all the same.

The crankshaft may need a pilot bearing installed before mating to the trans. So have a look
put the 5.3 and change or program the pcm

do you have a new or old boy style? just realized that is a crossover year. if its a new bodystyle the 5,3 is ok. not sure for old body style 1999.
