loose steering column

loose steering column
Thanks to the help of a kind member of this board, we were able to track down the problem with the crazy lights. There was a loose wire under the bed that was not reconnected.
When we replaced the switch in the steering column, we had to pull the steering wheel (duh). A few days after completing everything, the steering column "popped" when I stopped at a stop sign. Is now has about an inch of play, which is, well, frankly scaring the heck out of me! Is there a way to tighten things up, or is it time to take it to the dealer and let a "professional" take care of things? My husband has tried really hard to get my truck up and running again. If it is something he can handle here at home, then I know he will want to at least try it before taking it to someone else.
Thanks in advance!
PS -- it's a 1994 chevy c1500 worktruck

The play is in the steering column itself. There is no tilt on this wheel. I can physically pull the steering wheel (and all that's connected to it) towards me a good inch and push it back in. When I do this, you can see the shaft moving in the engine compartment.

Have your husband take the steering wheel apart again. There is a round clip in there that is kind of a bugger to put back together. You have to push down on a plate while it snaps into a groove and it hold the steering column "up". there is a special tool to reinstall the clip, but it is do-able without the tool.
There isn't much danger in driving it but I wouldn't let it go for too long.
I'll attach a pic to show exactly what i'm talking about
