Which motor to put in?
I have a 1993 4x4 longbed. It says 2500 on the side, but it is only a 6-lug. I dont know if they made a 3/4 ton 6-lug chevy or not. Anyway, the tranny and motor are on the brink of going out. It has a 305 in it now and I would like to put a motor in it that will be able to pull some loads if need be. Here are my options: I have a 1972 custom 4-door chevy truck sitting in my field. It either has a 400 small block (396) or a 400 big block (402) in it. Would either of those be worth a rebuild to put in? Or I could just get a crate motor, which I dont know what kind. I would mainly be pulling a 20ft cattle trailer about twice a month. What would you do?
If you go with the 350ci (5.7L) long-block then you won't have to change the transmission or anything, it will just bolt right up and you can move all the EFI/TBI components over and have a nice runner for not alot of money.
You will probably want to rebuild the TBI unit and replace the injectors (usually costs just over $100 if DIY) with the slightly higher flow units made for the 350, your stock ECM will work just fine.

The 400 small blockand 402 big block would both bolt up to the stock tranny too. But they are both more expensive to rebuild than a 350. Just price it both ways and see how it comes off. I'd go with the big block to be honest. I got a 454 in my 2500 and its great, screw fuel economy. A crate motor would run you more, much more, than rebuilding yourself though. The transmission is a 4L60E, so if you build the big block up too much, I don't think it could handle the torque if your towing with it.
i have a 2000 model old style pickup, 3/4 ton, it has 8 lugs, but i thought it was a light duty 3/4 as it has a 350 motor and the rear axles do not stick through wheels (flowing axles I think they are called).
it has the 4L80E transmission, rated to pull 7100#'s but transmission went out at 78K, so I would not recommend pulling much with it.
I think if you are going to pull heavy loads need larger motor than 350 (255 hp) 330# torque, and a straight shift transmission.
just my experience.
