mount portable GPS
I have a 2007 tahoe with factory navigation and I wanted a gps unit for my work truck but was hesitant on buying double din unit because of cost and the concern of being stolen. I was satisfied with the factory Bose 6 disc changer and aux connection that it had so I bought a cheap Garmin 205 gps for my truck but i was looking for ways to mount it. I choose the small cubby next to the A/C controls. I took out the little rubber mat, then applied the smooth dash mount in the cubby so you can mount the windshield mount to it. Doing it this way still allows you to remove the GPS and windshield mount and use in a different car. Later, I plan to get another car charger and hard wire it so it will be more inconspicuous. With this model, if it detects the car charger being unplugged, it will turn off in 30 seconds unless you hit a button. The A/C vent still moves both ways without hitting the gps. More importantly, i still get a strong signal on the gps when it is mounted this way. I have seen some people actually take a 3.5 inch gps unit and mount it behind the dash in the cubby hole itself but then you lose the portability of it. So i decided to go this route. Here are some pics.
