Default My 2003 5.3L is suddenly using oil :(

Hey guys. My 2003 Silverado is suddenly started using oil. about half a quart every 3000 miles. it just turned 130K miles on the dial. on my last change it never moved. i usually park it level and check the oil in the mornings when its cold and i noticed i was down one notch and it took half a quart to top it off again. i have been driving it pretty hard lately, since its been really windy and ive spent some time doing some long trips. my dads 2010 Chevy 1500 uses about a quart every 3000 with 50K miles and he dismissed it but my motor never used oil until now. i have no leaks, i dont tow with it, but i do get on it pretty good in the passing gear. motor runs good and i dont seem to be getting blue from the exhaust. i took it to a tranny shop and they said my tranny is in excellent shape and the motor feels really good.. but i really dont want a experience like my old truck, i sold it because it was a check the gas fill up the oil kind of deal. (2 quarts every 700 miles) I do feel some suction when i place my hand over the fill cap, nothing insane but its there. so do i have a PCV pissing itself or my motor on its way out??

Consider yourself lucky. Half a quart in 350 miles is using oil. That much in 3,000 miles is nothing short of wonderful.

A guy I knew when I was 18 or 19 had an old Chevy Vega that burned a GALLON (!) of oil every week. He got to the point where he would ask anyone changing the oil in their car if he could have the used oil.

It smoked so badly that it probably decimated the mosquito population across three counties in Pennsylvania.

Half a quart in 3,000 miles is pretty much "normal" wear - even for a newer vehicle. Count your blessings and keep on truckin' with the Chebby.

Mine will burn two quarts in 3000 miles,,,ONCE in a while. no known problem. 70k miles. Last oil change, it was down two quarts. Between the anti-freeze screwing things up, the oil usage, and the locking differential problem, I am about ready to push this heap of garbage over a cliff. I bought it new, it has never had a hard mile on it. Just JUNK. next truck will say Toyota on the grille. 30 years of Chevy garbage is enough.

Half a quart in 3000, might be "normal". My 2013 5.3L, in 7000 miles used 1/4 quart. It was real consistent from new until I traded it in on a 2015 2500HD a couple of weeks ago. But then, I disabled the AFM cylinder shutdown junk, and installed a PCV oil catch system on it to keep the oil and crud from the crankcase out of the intake and junking things up.

Of that 1/4 quart (8 oz) the engine used in 7000 miles, 6 oz was captured by the PCV oil trap. So the engine actually only "used" 2 oz of oil in 7000 miles. Not bad. I would be willing to bet, that most folks if they put a catch can, trap, filter, (whatever the term du jour is) on the PCV line, they would be very impressed at how much oil and junk is migrating thru there from the Crankcase and into the intake. That stuff can't be good for valves and piston rings.
