need help.. truck wont start.

need help.. truck wont start.
hey hows it goin
i have a 2001 chevy silverado with the 4.8 motors in it
the problem that i am having is when i go to start it i can hear the stater click once and then i lose all power of the truck like when you disconect the battery. if i wait 3min and go to try it again, then it will do the same thing and after doing this a few times i can get it to start
now i know how to work on cars but i dont know about electrical or what the hell could be going on so a little bit of help would be nice
i have checked the battery and the connections and they are all good.
