Unhappy New 2010

Just bought a new Z71 LT extended cab and learned today that it has the aluminum 5.3. I would not have bought it if I knew before signing. How long can I expect this to last? Should I trade it off now before problems start or it breaks completely?
I traded a 2002 Z71 that never gave me a moments trouble and I feel totally ripped off!

It's my understanding that these engines have been refined through the years to not only be dependable but are sought out by some for their lighter weight.
You shouldn't feel ripped off about it, do some research and talk to the mechanics at your dealership. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what you find out.
Sounds like a nice truck, best wishes.

I second that, I believe the technology is sound and the benefits out way the concerns... reading up on it is the best idea and visiting forums is also an excellent source of real world opinion....

i know the technology has been refined through the years and i dont think the engineers would have put this type of metal into a motor if they didnt feel it necessary. if you have the aluminum heads it would be better. but if you have the cast iron heads it might be a problem way down the road. because the two different types of metals causing more friction than similar metals. but it shouldnt be a problem. good luck.

When the Isuzu-sourced Duramax diesel (6.6L) came out about ten years ago, some people were concerned because it had aluminum cylinder heads. However, millions of miles of real-world usage have alleviated fears that doing so would lead to mettalurgical problems, failed head gaskets, etc., etc.

I have a 2004 Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L and it runs like a champ with just over 82,000 miles on it. A friend of mine has an '02 that is pushing 145,000 miles on a 5.3L - and he has not had any significant trouble with it.

Don't sweat it, sir. After all, don't you have a 100k mile warranty with it? Keep up with the maintenance, don't beat the crap out of it.....and you should be good to go.

All, Thanks for the responses. I've spent several days perusing the internet and haven't found anything negative about this engine save for a few who report minor oil leaks as a result of micro flaws in the aluminum casting at the gaskets. And none of these on newer motors.

I still am in my break-in with 416 miles on the odometer and have not yet put my LT to the task. She will be as pampered as my 2002 Z71 was so I am looking forward to 100,000 miles of 'easy riding'.

Many thanks...LJ
