Default OBD II wont read codes

I have a 06 chevy Silverado 2500hd with the 6.6 duramax, the check engine light came on 2 days ago, so i hooked up the obd hand scanner and linked it. came back with zero codes. why would it do this, talked to a few mechanics shops and they said it could be a dealer specific code, but like i told them my scanner has a good amound of chevy codes, thats why i got it. but they were clueless which leaves me clueless. any help would be nice!

Are you sure this vehicle is OBDII? I think it may actually be OBDIII.

I don't think OBDIII has been put in production yet...
is it possible its your service engine soon light that might be telling you its time for a oil change or other regularly scheduled maintenance those won't likely store any code...

If OBD III is in production i will kinda be surprised seems all the prototypes keep getting failing sensors after a few hours of maintenance. on another subject im positive its OBD II, HUD tells when regular maintenace is required and ive never seen the check engine light come one with it. ill reset the oil and fuel systems and see if that helps, planning on doing an oil change tomorrow and fuel filter change tomorrow, ill let you know if it helps. if not im probably going to go to the over educated underexperienced *** holes at the dealer. thanks for the help.

If you don't feel confident with the quality of service at the dealership you go to, you may want to poll the forum for recommended dealerships in your area...
