Default oil change

I have an 05 4X4 and only put about600-700 miles a month on it. Should I change the oil quarterly anyway? Maybe only 2X/year since I use synthetic in my other cars and planned to do the same here. More $$$ but it seems to make me feel better and it is required by my VW turbo diesels. (I am fortunate enough to own cars that get very good milage and to own a truck for everything else.)
Any opinions welcome.

Thanks

Jim

if i were you i would change it ever 3k miles or 3 months, you dont have to but if you only drive it short trips it never allows the oil to reach operating tempeture, which will end up causing sludge and build up

jmoore56, welcome to the forum!!! I would agree with 06 chevy, change the oil every 3000 miles. I was talking to the guy that was doing the oil change on my car, according him, oil (especailly synthetic) will last alot longer than 3k, the reason oil is changed every 3k is mainly because the filter will get full of junk which will leed to problems. So basically, if you changed the filter every 3k and top off the oil you almost could go a life time without completely changing your oil. I wouldn't try it, but I found it interesting. change the oil every 3k and you will be fine.

i own a couple of cars that i only put maybe 500 miles a year on, i use synthetic and i only change my oil every other year. i have found that your oil can actually acidify in the pan and it can collect condensation so i try to start and let them run up to operating temp once a month or so but other than that i have found no evidence to stick with the 3k/ 3 month rule other than the oil companies standing behind it, in fact i think gm now goes up to 10K miles unless im mistaken.

My chevy dealership says you can go 10,000 miles on regular GM oil for the 2007 and up GM vehicles. Im a little leary of that. I use Royal Purple Synthetic, and change every 5,000 but I drive my truck hard. I would agree with ehhget. Go with synthetics and dont worry too much about it.

fireman - i agree, ultimately the miles matter more than the time especially with synthetics. i use penzoil synthetic on all my vehicles, on my cars they only rack up500 miles/year since i hardly ever use them so after2-3 years i do it just to be safe-which is probably still overkill since the oil looksalmost as clean as new on the way out.
but in my truck i go about 7K and then change it which is usually once a year or so.

I would change old every 6 months, your biggest problem is moisture.

If you keep vehicles in air controled garage, may not be a problem, but if outside air can get to them, just as moisture will condense on outside of vehicle, it will condense on inside of motor. Now you have moisture in oil.

Only reason to change oil is to get dirt and moisture out of engine.

Moisture is a concern I agree, but if you run your engine to full operating temp you can do a good job offsetting that problem. Climate and storage conditions do factor in also. I happen to keep my vehicles inside and I live in Arizona so it does help me. If they were outside in the wet and cold I would probably increase the frequency a little but still the 3K thing is simply oil company bulls*&t to boost sales. Even the manufacturer says you can go a year.

Just food for thought, the truck that passed a million miles without an engine rebuild, he changed the oil every 3000 miles. But the artical did not specify wheather he was using synthetic or regular oil.
