Default Overhead console

I have a '97 1500 extended cab pick-up with an overhead console. There is a place on the front that looks like it could have something placed in it, I was wanting to put a digital thermometer/compass up there. Does anyone know where I could find one that I could make work? Thanks in advance.

In that model you should just be able to get the thermo/compass in the mirror as a stock part

No, I dont wan't the mirror w/ the compass/therm, I want something that'll go into the overhead console. There's a space on the front of it that's not being used, it has a cover that just pops off and there's quite a bit of space for something to be installed. But I can't seem to find anything along those lines anywhere.

A few years back I saw a truck that had a trip computer in that spot. It would give you the gas milage average, gas milage right now, and all the normal trip odometer data, miles, time, etc. Haven't seen one in a while though. I have a 2000 Z71 with the overhead consol also, and it has the same empty spot.

You might want to check this list to see what was OEM in your P/U:

My guess is that your P/U did not come with the wiring, specifically the temp sensor lead and a switchable-12v feed, toshow a temp/compass display that would be in a higher-trim version of that X-cab's console.
