Default Questions

hello im new to some of the mechanical on these trucks.
in my family we own
1996 gmc sierra 1500 z71 ext cab short box it has a 350 with 3.73's
1998 chev silverado 2500 ext long box it has a 454 with 4.10's
2004 chevy silverado 2500hd duramax crew cab short box 6.6 and not sure what diff i think 4.10 but people say it could have 3.73's

my first question is i raced my dad i had the 98 2500 and he had the 04 duramax. and i beat him, it kinda puzzled me because his diesel has more horsepower and torque then me he told me it was because i have more top end power then him. can someone explain that to me

second is i have been told that the 4.10 diff is better for towing/hauling things but burns more gas which i already knew about but they have also told me that if you have a 4.10 rear end it is better for racing and will have better acceleration then one with a 3.73 is that true?

my final question is just on finding help on what vehicle i should buy since my dad has the duramax and i already had the 96 and he gave me his 98. i still drive the 96 for its better on fuel i'am looking for a new or newer truck and would like to keep the 96 and 98 just cause. now i have looked at trucks of all variations most being of the 04 model. a 1500 ext and crew cab both z71 with the 5.3 and a crew cab 1500hd with the 6.0. also a 05 crew cab diesel. i have one quad and sometimes borrow a rhino from my dad. i drive 20 minutes out to work and 20 minutes back home mon-fri 8-5 my questions are is it worth buying the diesel for my current routine or should i stick to the 1500? if so will the 5.3 have the power i like to get things done or should i get the hd version with the 6 litre? does the 35 more horsepower make much of a difference between the two? most 1500hd i have seen have the 4.10 rear end. if anything else i have been down at my local gm dealership and looked at a 2008 gmc 1500 with the 6.0 vortexmac is has 367 hp and a 6 speed transmission. only thing that i dont like is depending on what cab style you have it messes up with what length of box you have and a 5'8 box looks stupid and doesnt do much when putting stuff in it they should only make 6'6 and 8'0 boxes

thank you

The reason you beat him with the older truck is he has "torque-management" in his computer slowing him down a bit.(obviously enough for you to beat him)

The 410 has gobs of low-end power. Hauling, racing, whatever. The 373 is a lower ratio all-around gear. So if it's line racing, the 410's the one. At 90 MPH, my 342s are still in the middle of the engines power band, while the 410s are screaming at @ 3800RPM. I guess it depends on the race. You will sacrifice top end speed for low end power with 410s, and vice versa.

What kind of work, and jobs are you doing? If you want to see MPG improvement, why not go with a V6-1500 2WD? They're easily rated to handle a quad, and you have the heftier trucks to fall back on for a big job.

If your looking for better fuel economy, I would look into buying a 88-90 model chevrolet with a TBI unit. They do not carry much horsepower ( if you want the V6) but it will definately more MPG.

If your looking for speed, I would go for a chevy s-10 pickup with a V8. They are small, lightweight, and will go faster than any regular size pickup out there.
