Default rear end gears

Just wonder what your guys opinions on what rear end gears are better for street/strip use? I have a 305 cammed etc making it a 340 if i recall right, so what gears should i be considering for this set up?

Thanks for any tips.

kinda depends on a few things. if you are still driving it on the street I would say a 4.10 would be good if you have overdrive. if you don't have over drive then a 3.73. but i don't know a ton about this kinda thing a whole lot, I am sure one with more know how on this will chime in.

LARIDERS got the right idea. what kind ov vehicle? what are you looking for, off the line jump, or cruising ability, freeway runner? if you want more of a jump off the line, 4.10's, maybe 4.56's, but you start losing good streetability there. 3.73's you'll lose the line jump a bit but these are much better for highway/cruising, and may still give you a decent strip performance.

I don't run the thing on street, but just at the strip some weekends for fun. It doe's have over drive since its an auto, but that might be changing soon once my rebuilt gets back.

P.S: Oh forgot this is a truck c1500 swb.

if motor is built, pushing some good power, go 4.56's, otherwise, 4.10's.

For the track I would say 4.10. 1/4 mile track? I put 3.73 in my 5.0 mustang when I did the engine but I still drive it on the street.

Its as good power, almost to much for the auto trans to hold which is stock. It had good take off with the stock gear until i screwed up timing putting in a oil pressure gauge (had to remove distributor to install it, almost got that worked out). I like to drive the truck around so don't want to stick anything in there that makes cruising around to much. Plus i baby it when driving around on the street . I can get 3.73s pretty cheap, haven't got prices on others yet. I'll prob try to get 4.10s priced later this week. I think anything above those 2 would be asking for to much for street cruising, but I'm no expert on gears.

with the overdrive trans, 4.10's would probably work best in your case. give you pretty good launch off line, pull pretty good, and still very streetable. the 3.73's are great for the street, but not so great at the track. they'll work, but not near as well as the 4.10's.

Thanks for info, I'm still waiting on the price for the 4.10's from a buddy. If cheap enough I'll give them a try since the 3.73s are cheap enough to buy if 4.10s don't work for me.
