Replacing differential seal
The seal on the output shaft (front differential)is leaking. Is it just a matter of dropping the shaft out, removing yolk and prying the seal out? Then tapping the new seal in? Or is there "special" tools needed, other than a impact to get the nut off the yolk???
In so many words, what you say about how to do it is right. There is a shade- tree mechanic way that involves marking the position of the nut, counting the visible threads before disturbing it. I make no guarantees that the replacement does not shorten the total life of the diff, given the possible impact on crush washers, or whatever it is that keeps clearances right in there. I have done two and added 100,000 miles plus after. One diff survived an additional 170K miles. One passed away about 80K after I did it. Do you own a Chiltons or Haynes for the truck?
