Default rough idle, spitting and sputtering

i have a 90 model half ton 4x4 with a 350. it runs fine until it gets hot and then it starts spitting and sputtering. it starts to smell like gas really bad and if i kill it and start it back up it idles down to about 100 rpm and comes back up for a while then it idles fine but still pops. i dont have a clue what could be causing this and any help would be greatly appreciated!
