Service 4WD
I have an 05' Silverado Crew Cab with 67000 miles on it, and recently the "Service 4WD" comes up on my display. The problem is that when it it comes up, I do not have any lights on the 2WD/4WD selector area and I can't change it unless I turn the truck off a time or two and the lights come back on. Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem before I spend a bunch of money at the dealership?
I don't know if the problem was taken care of for the 2005's, but the selector switch for my 99 went out, and I guess it's a common problem with Silverados around those years. When the switch went out, the "service 4WD " message would come on out of the blue, and the LED's would go out.
Easy to replace, around $50 on-line.

I have had the same problem on my 04 2500. never worried to much about it because it always goes away. the dealer said it was probably the switch itself. the transfer case itself seems to work fine though.
Depends on what code comes up. I had the same thing happening to my 04 Z71 and ended up replacing the encoder motor on the transfer case. Lots of guys have got away with replacing or re soldering the leads on the switch at the dash but mine was the encoder motor. worth having the codes read to see what it is then do the fix yourself if capable of doing it.
