Default Silverado 1500 Radio Swaps

Ive got an 05 silverado 1500 z71. I want to swap out the radio unit thats in my truck now and put in a newer one with an aux port so I can directly hook up my iphone to play music. I was told already that you cant swap to a newer one but not entirely sure if thats true. Any input or anyone know otherwise???
