Spare won't come down all the way
I recently purchased a used 2007 1500 2wd classic Silverado. I tried to get the spare down but it won't come down all the way. The the cable unwinds all the way with about two feet on the ground. but the spare only lowers about 6 inches. What am I missing here. I don't recall anything extra to do with the avalanche I had. I don't see how the spare doesn't lower, thought the cable held it up.

Lower the spare as low as it will go on to some jackstands. you should be able at this point to remove the spare. It's my guess that the cable is some how wrapped up. Once the tire is out of the way you'll be able deal with the cable and crank system.

It is caught on the safety catch. There is a procedure listed in the manual, I can not remember it though. We have a fleet account that uses those trucks, they had to tow one in because the driver could not get it down even with the procedure. We could not get it free we had to replace the hoist. You can take the entire hoist and tire down by removing the bolt, then you can push the safety catch with a pry bar or channel locks. When it is down lube the catch up really good.
