Default Speedometer Problem

Just joined this forum and need some suggestions. I've got an '04 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Ext. cab with the 5.3 motor. Recently the speedometer started going whacko and now when the truck is completely stopped it still shows 30 mph?? It did this one day and would only go down to 10 when stopped and today it only goes down to 30 when stopped. Any suggestions on what to do to remedy this problem?
Thanks.

First, Welcome to the Chevy Forums.

Do a thread search, this topic has been covered extensively about six months ago.

I'm pretty sure it's a recall.

My Silverado started that a couple of weeks ago. Lasted about a week and it slowly corrected itself. I need to find out what's up with that before it happens again. Search>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

There is a "special buleten" on the cluster. I just got off the phone with a local dealership that I did not buy the truck from. My cluster is going haywire as well. They said if the truck is an 04 with less than 80K miles to bring it in. What they will to is take the cluster out of the truck test it. verify it doesn't work, place one on order and install your old one back in. 3-5 days later to ship the new cluster back to the dealership and then call you to bring it in for about an hour to install the new cluster. no charge!!!!!

Hope this helps.

I dug around and found the bulletin but it stated 7 yrs./70,000 miles as a limit. So the mileage limit is now 80,000 mi.?

This is just what the service manager told me on the phone yesterday. I only have 60k so I didn't worry about asking questions. I'll be there tomorrow and will fill everyone in on what I find out. I'll ask if they exteded the bulletin to 80k.

Somtimes you can open the dash up and if you disconnect the speedometer it will reset it and fix the issue. Thats not a gaurentee though. sometimes it will work, sometimes it wont. its a hit or miss.
