steering column
With a crowbar. :-D
Haha..not funny... yeah, i know... sorry. (One day i hope someone will just read the first sentence and just DO it ! . And then he might come back to this forum asking, "right, so, now how do i put it back in place?" Or am I just a sadistic bastard?)
First, find someone who is able to get between your dashboard and your seats. Give him a wrench (is that the right word?) and tell him to unscrew the bolts from the lowest part of the dashboard. (Where the steering column disappears in). Then you can remove the lower part of your dashboard. You will see a lot of wiring harnesses (white and black plastic boxes with wires in it. In Belgium we call it "sugars". But I bought myself an english dictionary and that tells me its a Wiring harness. ) I would suggest that you label them all. Because its always a little bit of a puzzle trying to figure out which one is which.
Then... theres the transmission cable. First you need to remove the cable from the transmission. (not sure about the silverado, but usually its on the RIGHT side of the transmission). You cant pull the cable through the steering column yet !!!!!
Now, there are 4 bolts that hold the column up. Unscrew them :-D . I hope you know what a firewall is. (And no...i'm not talking about a computer here.)
The firewall is the part of your car that seperates the engine from the cabin. Its metal. If fire bursts out in your car, this should keep the fire from entering your vehicle. (Hence the name...)
The cable from your transmission goes through that firewall. So you have to pull the steering column part back, untill you can not go any further. The hole should be big enough to pull the cable through it, if you rotate the column a little. (Its always easier to have some helping hands...)
And then...TATAAAA !!! its loose.
And if you want to know how to put it back...well... just print this text out, turn it upside down and there you have it. Good luck !!!!
