I have been screwing with this thing trying to fix it with my knowledge. I gave up and gave it to my local mechanic to see if he can diagnose it. He said that the 3 and 5 cylinders have no compression which is why it has been idling and running like crap. Head gasket is the culprit and he wanted to machine the head and what not. He estimated $1200 for just head gasket or $2000 for both head gaskets and head machine. I originally bought this truck for $4,000 a few months ago and is in pretty clean condition other than the compression problem. What can I get for it the way it sits?

 

Well do you plan on keeping it for a long time or are you one of those who buys a different vehicle every year or two? Investing the money into the truck if you plan on getting another one soon could lead to a loss on the truck because you would not be able to get the price to cover the cost of repairs.

But if you plan on keeping the truck for a long time then consider it an investment. I have a truck that I plan on keeping and have spent quite a few $ as well as countless hours performing repairs, but I plan on keeping the truck so to me it is worth it.

In the end you have to make the decision.
