Thinking of moving up to a 2500
I'm thinking of moving up to a 2500 series Chevy from my '97 C1500 so I can carry a camper and go offroad in Baja. Does anyone know about the reliability or issues with the older Chevy Diesels (91-98?). Any help with this would be great, as I love my 4.3L, 5-speed, 2wd, but I know that I need a more heavy-duty truck to carry a camper and all our Baja stuff.

Myold man drives a 97 Chevy K2500 ext cab long bed. It's a great truck. It has 58,000 miles on it. He mostly uses it to tow his Jayco 5th wheel. He says it tows fine. The old 6.5, in my opinion is no match for the new duramax, but for the cost the 6.5 is pretty decent. The only problems he has had is from the lack of driving it. If diesel trucks set for a long time (as his does)apparently the tanks will begin to mold. The mold can then get into your fuel system and mess up the pump. I believe if your diesel sits for a long time between driving their are solutions to this such as making sure the tank is filled to the brim. I also think their is additives which can be mixed into the fuel for preventing mold. He is a rare though most people that I know that own diesels drive them often and never have had mold issues.

I would have to agree with An89Chevy. You're much better off going with a 5.7 or a 7.4. The 6.5's and 6.2's that I've delt with have all different types of problems. I've mainly had problems with their turbos. Even ones that I have drivin that run alright just don't seem to have the power that I preffer. I have a 7.4 3500 Dump bed that I drive everyday and it is great. Its been through all kinds of abuse and it runs great still.
