Default Trailer Hook-up

My 2007 Silverado 1500 LTZ 4wd 5.1L Crew Cab short bed came with 4 pin wiring for the trailer. I just bought a new boat trailer that has surge brakes and a 5 pin plug. When I try to backup the trailer on the slightest incline the brakes lock. If I change the wiring on my truck plug to a 5 pin, will this correct the problem? All the lights work fine as is, so if this will not make any difference, I'll just leave things alone.

Meanwhile, I've been disabling the trailer brakes when using reverse. That's a pain in the butt. Thanks.

Default plug

that extra wire in the plug is for the back up dis able for the trailer ,it should be hot when in reverse .you will have to ether change to a 5 wire plug or get a single plug wired into the backup light's .i would go with the 5 wire flat plug you can still use the 4 wire .if you have a 7 wire plug on there also they make a adaptor http://www.draw-tite.com/

Default trailer hook up

I have a 2007 silverado 4x4 ltz. I have a 6 pin plug on the truck, I bought a camper that has a 7 pin. I know I have to change the harness, but what kind of brake controller do I need. Is it easy to install, do I have to run another wire etc.

Surge brakes are not powered by anything except "surge", when in reverse and backing uphill you slide the latch pin into a hole that stops the brake actuator from depressing.

Not all trailers have a 'lockout' hole, and and discs require power to a solinoid to block brake pressure when in reverse (comes from the back-up light circuit).

If you have a round factory 4-pin, it may actually be 5. Check the center pin for power in reverse. If the trailer harness is round, you should be good to go. If it's flat, the usual auto parts suspects will have a round to 5-flat adaptor. I just bought one that can be used with either a 4 or 5 flat ..
