Default transmission issue

Hey guys, I have an 08 silverado 1500 5.3, I was pulling into work tonight when suddenly I lost power and slowed. Felt almost like a flat tire or ball joint fell out. I was only doing maybe 15 mph. Stopped and looked and found nothing. Proceeded to pull into a parking spot and felt a lot of resistance and heard clunking/grinding noise from the rear end. I was able to get into spot. I put it drive again and rolled a foot without the throttle and the resistance stopped me.. reverse there wasn't any resistance just the clunking noise. No check engine light.. no leaking fluids. I am still within the powertain warranty, however I did not follow the gm's service interval in regards to fluids besides oil changes every 3k. It has 62k on it now. What does it sound like to you guys and will gm honor the repair or say I didn't follow the maintenance schedule. Thanks

Take it in for warranty work....At 62K they would honor it.

Generally trans service is recommended at 100k unless used under "Severe" conditions.

no worries

JStratta, I'm so sorry to hear about your frustration! I recommend taking your Silverado to a Chevrolet dealership for service, but if you have lingering concerns at any point in the process please feel free to send us a direct message.

Best,

X2. I know the old th350's when they "went out" reverse was the only gear you had.

Sounds like a bearing in the axle housing. Could be pinon or axle shaft bearing. My '99 Sub did the same thing and gouged the diff. when the axle bearing failed. Not a difficult repair. I like in a manufacturing hub, machine shops, etc., so it's not hard to get parts. Guy at shop told me that maybe GM a bad batch of parts from supplier. That's what happens when you farm out all your work. Suppliers are always looking to cut costs and will change specs without approval to increase profits. Anyway, if it's the rear end, change ALL bearings, races and seals when the job is done. No sense doing the job twice.

You may have a differential side gear problem. Also if it does it or not make the noise, check the oil level and condition. See if you see extreme discoloration or metal. It is better to check it with an automotive technician as soon as possible.

sounds like you lost a tooth or more in the pinion gear in the rearend.if it's covered by warranty...take it to a dealership have them pull the punkin cover off and check it out.

Update:

After returning from work, I drove it away without any problems. As i was driving home I did hear noise from the rear brakes. So when i got home I took the rear driver side drum off, as I did that metal pieces fell out. Ended up being the "w" shaped metal clamp/bracket that holds the shoes in place shattered into three pieces which jammed in the drum. Napa had the part and I went ahead and changed the shoes on both sides while I had it apart. Thanks for the help.
