Stuck in park

My 2002 Aveo is stuck in park. To move gear selector you have to stick the key in this slot by the shift selector, then it will move. Can anyone help with this problem? Thanks

do the brake lights work?if not replace the stop lamp switch.if yes replace the floor shift assy

When I had this problem with my Aveo, it turned out to be the fuse for the radio. I had intalled a sub and was blasting the radio at the store. The fuse for the radio blew and I just figured I'd get home and replace it. The car would not move out of park unless I used the release. After I changed the fuse, it worked again. Check to make sure that all of the fuses are intact in your car.
