05 2500 4x4 Suburban with a clunk in the steering column and stiff steering.
'05 2500 4x4 Suburban with a clunk in the steering column and stiff steering. I don't think the two are related. I was thinking the stiff steering might be a bad tie rod end. the steering pump was replaced a year ago. It has the proper amount of fluid. What else could it be?
The clunk might be caused by the intermediate shaft which is a known issue and was at one time covered by a TSB or extended warranty. Originally it would be relubed but eventually was replaced w/ a new design. The stiff steering might be caused by a CV joint getting stiff.
Our 05 1500 had the clunk issue; was re-lubed once, then replaced. Had to bitch & moan to get it done at no charge before the recall was issued. My dealer finally gave in as a "good will gesture". Has not clunked since the replacement.
The fact it’s a 2500 is important. Unlike 1500’s , 2500’s have grease fittings. There are 12 fittings. Even if they have been recently greased, some mechanics miss a few of the 12 and this can cause stiff steering and sometimes induce a moan from the power steering pump. Make sure it’s properly greased.

I am having this same issue on a rig I bought last night although steering is good. There is just a slight "clunk" when the wheel starts turning or when hitting a bump. Steering doesn't feel loose when wiggling wheel. It almost "feels" like the steering column is loose but that's not the case. The sound is almost under the dash...
If I were to replace it what is the PN of the upgraded part? Are aftermarket replacements the new style?
