Post 1989 Suburban Engine Upgrade

I have an 89 Suburban 2500 with a 350 engine and 400 transmission. These trucks were not cheap on gas, so looking for an engine upgrade that would give me better mileage. I hear the newer engines deliver close to 20 MPG hauling and 25 MPH city driving.

Has anyone upgraded this vintage van to a newer engine?? I'd sure like to know your experience.

Thanks very much!! Post info here or send PM.
