Default 1995 Chevy Tahoe idling high / accelerating slow, battery light/ service engine

Hello everyone!

This is my first post. I have a machanic friend working on my car but he has no idea what the problem is b/c he's replaced several parts. Things that have been replaced: starter (although it sometimes screaches when ignition turns), complete tune up, including new wires, throttle body part (head) I can't exactly remember.. Maybe a gasket or the top metal piece. New hoses. After battery light came on and car kept dying a month ago, we had a new alternator put in and that fixed the issue I'm having temporarily. Last week, battery light came back on and car died repeatedly, also while driving. We replaced battery with higher voltage battery. Battery Light is still on + service engine soon light is on.

The scary issues with my Tahoe now in addition to these is high idling and accelerating problems while in drive. There is not always a sluggish feeling while in drive, however the speedometer spikes and drops very fast. As soon as the car turns on the idling surges to almost 2000 RPMs. The engine is so loud - when I shift into drive it shifts really hard forward even with break applied. The RPMs reduce slightly but not much.

While listening and observing engine during high RPMs, the water pump seal broke, all while in park.

I am not positive but I believe the battery and RPM issues are separate. My machanic has listened to many parts with stethoscope and can't figure it out. He says he found one small vaccumme leak but don't think that would cause all these problems. Any ideas?

Is the check engine light on? Read the codes. Try a new mechanic.

check for any codes? 1995 uses the very simple tbi system. don't remember if the tbi system has throttle position sensor... i'd check that. if its idling at 2k rpm of course its going to bang into gear really hard. i'd avoid doing that... not good for the tranny.

also check for bad grounds.
