2000 Suburban AC Compressor Belt Snapping
Hi All!
Looking for any thoughts on what would be causing my a/c compressor belt to snap cleanly? Has happened twice in a 2 week period - replaced the 1st belt and the tensioner and 2 weeks later replaced the belt after a snap... 2 days later, snapped again and had to change tensioner again... Any thoughts, tips, and comments welcome - and thanks in advance!

It's possible your a/c compressor has no oil in it (pac 150). But don't try and check the oil level because the a/c system is under high pressure. Take it to a shop and have them recover the old refrigerant then you can start pulling the compressor. Tape off any refrigerant lines to prevent any air and moisture from entering the system. Remove the compressor and drain any oil if there is any into a small container. About 3oz. should come out. If no oil drains out replace the compressor. If some oil is present it could be the a/c clutch. If thats the case replace the compressor. Once you replace the compressor you have to evacuate the system with a vacuum pump for about 30 minutes. Then recharge the system with the amount of refrigerant that is indicated on top of the accumulator. Good luck
Sorry, but had the same issue on our 2005 Yukon Denali with rear AC, kept snapping AC belts, cooled fine until each belt snapped. This can happen by design of compressor mounted so low, causes compressor to "slug", and break belts.
I installed a brand-new compressor to fix, a few years ago. I did NOT replace the condenser, I did NOT replace the accumulator. This fixed it. I also added a $40 Deslugger electronic module form Four Seasons, was MACS product of the year back then, helps prevent slugging on a compressor that has NOT had the issue (won't help a slugged compressor). Five years later we sold the 2005 and purchased a 2011, and I transferred the Deslugger module to the 2011.

Above post: in October 2022, a red light runner totaled that 2011 Yukon Denali; since we could not open the hood or crawl under at the body shop prior to it being totaled, I was unable to salvage/retrieve the Deslugger module. Since Mrs. Cusser needed a vehicle with enough power to haul a 2-horse trailer and again did not want a pickup truck, and we did not want to spend $80K or more, and used Suburbans or non-Denali Yukons did not generally have the larger 6.2 liter engine, we picked up a creampuff 2014 Yukon XL Denali in November 2022.
In July 2023, I bought a new Deslugger module for this through Amazon for $53, and installed it. Yesterday, I noticed that the AC was blowing warm immediately, opened the hood and saw that the compressor was not engaged. So I unplugged both ends of the Deslugger, plugged the 2-wire AC harness back into the compressor and the AC compressor engaged. I did this test a second time, hooking up the Deslugger with no engagement, then bypassing it to engage the compressor. So defective Deslugger, only worked 2 months.
Since Amazon reseller only lists refund or replacement for 30 days if in original/unused condition, and Amazon states to get warranty through manufacturer, I contacted Four Seasons and in my first reply it didn't seem that they wanted to be too helpful. But that was on a Friday afternoon, so I need to wait until next week to know....

Update: Amazon "product support" page told me to contact manufacturer to fulfill the warranty: Four Seasons basically told me to take a hike, not their issue, to try to get refund or replacement from the Amazon reseller, who of course will return it to Four Seasons.
Anyway, looks like the reseller (PartsHawk) WILL stand behind this even though their listing page states 30 day return window if in new unused condition. O'Reilly and others sell this with a 1-year warranty for refund or replacement.
