You need special tools to do it properly. Only properly trained people should do it if they want it to last. At my shop we give the customer 2 options #1 we give them a phone # of a guy we recommend or #2 buy a used or remanufactured rear. This is for any internal rear end work except for axles, axle bearings or spider gears. Very specific measurements must be made in order to set the rear up properly with the proper shims.

My problem is I dont know which bearing it is. The gears were clean, nothing abnormal. But the sound was from the housing. I did the old screw drive to ear test and the axel near the wheels and then on the diff housing... loudest at the housing.
Are the axel bearing near the housing or on the end?

thanks, I had a friend that works for the Police department as a mech do the work for me. Repalced all the bearings in the rear end and the U joints. She is dead quiet now!
