Default 2001 suburban gas gauge

I have a 2001 suburban with a 36 gallon tank, sometimes the gas gauge goes down to empty when it has plenty of fuel in it, and a little while later it comes back up. What is the most likely cause of this, and if it's the fuel pump in the tank, where is the acess located, is it on top. Your help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks Dennis

I believe you actually have two tanks and a transfer pump. so I would check the fuel level sensors in both tanks (they have to be removed in order to do so).

Thanks for the information, I guess the only way to find out is to remove the tank, or tanks. Dennis
