2002 Suburban Diagnostic Question
Hey guys! Nice work on the cool forum with helpful information.
So anyway, there's a 2002 Suburban Z71 resting lazily in a giant pile of its own feces in the middle of my driveway right now. The dealer wants $1,000 to replace the intake manifold gaskets and knock sensors based on the codes they saw when I took it in about a month ago. The problem didn't seem THAT bad to me so I had them reset the codes and decided to drive it for a while to see what happened. Well, it had been idling rough but was chugging along like it's cheerful self when yesterday it suddenly decided not to start after a lunch break at home. Yes, fuel in the tank. Yes, batteries good. The engine "catches" briefly, but never comes up to start idle and chokes out quickly.
I plugged in my OBD and got the same EBCM death codes that I always see (more about that later in an aside) along with PO174, PO171, PO174, which I understand means the left and right banks are reporting lean.
My questions:
1) Does failure to start point more at the fuel filter / injectors than the mass air flow or intake leaks?
2) Why is the mechanic recommending replacement of the knock sensors? Is it just because they are easy to reach with the intake manifold off?
3) What do you think is the most logical progression of work
Aside: Has anyone had any experience with the outfits that repair EBCMs for a fraction of the cost of replacing them?

I spoke with the mechanic. He said the truck was throwing P0322 when they checked it, no P017X at the time, however. Guess I'll be purchasing a set of brand-spanking-new knock sensors as well...
