Default 2002 Tahoe - Whine noise on cold start

Hey all,

First post. My 2002 Tahoe makes an annoying and alarming whine noise from a cold start that will go away once it has warmed up. I can then turn it off and on as many times as I want and there is no noise. The noise has been there a long while, but it is now getting worse as it takes longer for it to go away. If I give it fuel from idle the whine/whistle will sometimes get louder until it stops but then when the RPM's go back down the noise will come back again.

Here https://anonfiles.com/file/42b02fc9c...c590416f2c4e1c is a .zip of an audio recording I made of it that is about 1½ min long in hopes someone can identify what is making that awful racket.

Thanks,
V

My first guess would be the power steering pump. Next time you're hearing the whine, turn the wheel left or right and see if the noise changes.

Check your power steering fluid level, and if that doesn't address it, you might need a new pump.

Hi - thanks for your reply. It doesn't seem to be the PSP as I tested it with the noise & turning the wheel all the way left and right. PSF is also good.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
V

I didn't hear the recording but from your description it could be a belt squeal. smear a dab of rtv on both belts then run the truck. it may be a temporary fix.
