Default 2004 Suburban AWD/4WD Questions

Hello all. I am new to the forum and have inherited my mother's 2004 Suburban, 5.3L. I've done a lot of work to this vehicle since owning, but I'm stumped on the AWD system it has. I have attached two pictures of what I'm experiencing with the AWD switch. Half the time I turn the vehicle on, I get the red dot. The other half, I get the yellow and all seems to be working fine. Does this mean the Suburban is in AWD all of the time? What does the red dot mean? Could it perhaps be a faulty switch? I haven't tried hitting the 4WD Low button. Afraid to do so. I'm very sorry for the size and quality of the pictures. I'm unsure how to make them smaller. Thanks for your help!

Alan
